(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland held off the challenge of moderate GOP Lt. Gov. Nancy Hollister to hold onto his seat in southern Ohio's 6th congressional district.
The district is closely divided politically. Strickland lost it in 1994 and then won it back in 1996, and Republicans made a major push to take it back again this year.
With the endorsement of Gov. George Voinovich and Rep. John Boehner, Hollister defeated two conservatives, who divided the right-of-center vote, in the Republican primary.
The Republican party has helped out their candidate's cause, running "positive" ads in the district touting her "Ohio values." Outside money played a big role in this competitive district, as the Associated Builders spent $26,634 to help Hollister oust Strickland.
In a decision he struggled with leading up to the vote, Strickland was among the most vulnerable of the Democrats who opposed the Republican resolution for a broad impeachment inquiry of President Bill Clinton. But Hollister did not make that vote a centerpiece of her campaign.
First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the state in the final weekend before the election to campaign for Strickland.
