Udall wins Redmond's New Mexico House seat

(AllPolitics, November 3) -- In a critical House seat pick-up for the Democrats, New Mexico Attorney General Tom Udall has beaten incumbent Republican Rep. Bill Redmond in New Mexico's 3rd congressional district.

Udall's victory was not a surprise, as Redmond was something of a political rarity: a conservative Republican in a district that has long been a Democratic stronghold.

The Democrat also had the advantage of a well-known political name. His father, Stewart Udall, and uncle, Mo Udall, are former congressmen, and his cousin Mark Udall is running for the House in Colorado.

After a failed bid for the seat in 1996 against former Rep. Bill Richardson, Redmond won a special election in 1997 to fill Richardson's vacated seat. His victory resulted in part from a divided Democratic party, poor Hispanic turnout and a Green Party candidate who siphoned votes away from the Democratic nominee.

In 1998, Redmond faced a stronger challenger in the shape of Udall, who appealed to environmentalists and most Democrats. That appeal apparently was enough to keep voters from going to Green Party candidate Carol Miller in great enough numbers to affect the race.

Udall is a two-term attorney general for New Mexico. Previously, Udall worked as a U.S. attorney before going into private practice.

Redmond moved from Illinois to Los Alamos, home of the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory, nine years ago, saying he was attracted to the city's intellectual community. In addition to his work as minister at a Santa Fe Christian church, he has managed a roller-skating rink.
