Republican Baker fends off tough challenge in Louisiana House race
(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Rep. Richard Baker, the veteran lawmaker of Louisiana's 6th congressional district, fended off a tough challenge from Democrat Marjorie McKeithen.
First elected in 1986, Baker has not had difficult re-election fights in recent years, but the 1998 race against McKeithen was a tough one.
She is the daughter of the current secretary of state, Republican Fox McKeithen, and granddaughter of former Democratic Gov. John McKeithen. She also proved herself to be an adept fund-raiser and hard campaigner.
Redistricting more than doubled the percentage of African-American voters in the district from 13 percent to 29 percent. McKeithen argued that Baker tended to concentrate more on out-of-state banking issues than on local matters. He is a member of the House Banking & Financial Services Committee.
