Democrats hold on to Colorado's 2nd district
(AllPolitics, November 4) -- When liberal Democrat Rep. David Skaggs stepped down in Colorado's 2nd congressional district after six terms, Republicans hoped to take over the traditionally Democratic district -- but it didn't happen.

The Democratic candidate, State Rep. Mark Udall, beat his moderate pro-choice Republican opponent, Bob Greenlee, a Boulder city councilman and former mayor of the Rocky Mountain town.
Greenlee has far more political and business experience than Udall, a largely untested first-term Colorado legislator.
But the photogenic Udall won a competitive Democratic primary and had the benefit of a good political name. He is the son of former Arizona Rep. Morris "Mo" Udall, who ran for president in 1976, and nephew of Stewart Udall, who served as Secretary of the Interior under President John Kennedy.
Stewart Udall's son, Tom Udall, is also heading for Congress, after beating Republican incumbent Rep. Bill Redmond in New Mexico's 3rd congressional district.

Mark Udall also received strong support from his party, including a Colorado campaign swing on his behalf by Vice President Al Gore.
Democratic control of Colorado's 2nd congressional district dates all the way back to 1974. But this traditionally liberal college town, commonly compared to California's Berkeley, is changing. Most of Boulder's newcomers are affluent and Republican.
Still, a majority -- 38 percent of the electorate -- are registered independents, which forced both candidates to appeal to the middle during the fall campaign.
