GOP Gov. Janklow keeps South Dakota seat
(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Incumbent Republican Gov. Bill Janklow won a fourth, four-year term as governor of South Dakota on Tuesday, fending off a spirited challenge from Democratic state Senate Minority Leader Bernie Hunhoff. Libertarian Bob Newland and Independent Ron Wieczorek also were on the ballot.
Janklow coasted to victory by carrying most groups -- even half the Democrat voters lined up behind him. But more than a third of all voters who supported Republican Janklow also voted for Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle.
