GOP Gov. Almond keeps Rhode Island seat

(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Republican incumbent Gov. Lincoln Almond beat his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Myrth York , to win another term in the state of Rhode Island. His victory comes in part thanks to the strength of older voters. Independents also leaned his way.

The race was a rematch between two lawyers, and observers complained it wasn't nearly as interesting as the first contest four years ago.

Almond touted the turnabout in Rhode Island's economy as he campaigned hard for a second term. He talked up what he called the 'bread-and-butter" issues, promising more aid for schools and more jobs.

York, a liberal Democratic state senator who narrowly lost to Almond in 1994 (47 percent-44 percent), shifted to mainstream issues this year, making campaign speeches on education and economy. She promised to shrink class sizes, provide business subsidies and initiate other programs to help working families.

The Democrat, who wanted to be the state's first woman governor, criticized the incumbent on health care, the environment and economic development. Exit polls show women voters split their ballots between York and Almond.

The candidates also disagreed over whether a new basketball arena should be built at the University of Rhode Island -- he was for it, while she was against it.

Democrats dominate state politics, but more voters are declaring themselves Independents. A state-spending cap added to the uncertainty of the race.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
