Conservative Johanns wins Nebraska governorship
(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Republican Mike Johanns, a conservative with wide support among the religious right, swept to victory in Nebraska to beat back Democrat Bill Hoppner.
Johanns won strong support from the far right, while Hoppner scored among Independents and moderates -- but not enough to carry him to victory.
This race might have been closer if Measure 413 -- designed to slow the growth of state and local government spending and cut taxes -- had not been on the ballot. Four in 10 voters showed up to support the initiative, with the majority of those voters supporting Johanns.
