(AllPolitics, November 3, 1998) -- The nation's only Independent incumbent governor, Angus King, easily won re-election in Maine.
Exit polls showed a majority of Democrats in the Pine Tree State voted for King, as did half of all GOP voters and two-thirds of independents.
More than eight in 10 voters said their personal financial situation has either improved or stayed the same during the past two years.
King defeated four challengers, including the GOP nominee, former congressman Jim Longley, whose father served as an Independent governor in the mid-1970s. King also beat the Democratic candidate, Tom Connolly, a Portland attorney.
