MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AllPolitics, August 2) -- Former Alabama Gov. George Wallace was released from a Montgomery hospital Sunday after four days of treatment for a chronic breathing problem, his second hospitalization in the last two months.

The four-term governor and former presidential candidate was admitted to the emergency room at Jackson Hospital on Wednesday in serious but stable condition before being transferred to intensive care and then, on Friday, a private room.

Paralyzed from the waist down and suffering from Parkinson's disease, Wallace, 78, has been beset with a variety of illnesses and infections since he was shot in the spine by a would-be assassin while campaigning for president on May 15, 1972.

His illnesses also have left him legally deaf and with difficulty speaking.
