Voter's Voice: Johnny Chung's Contributions

We got quite a bit of e-mail over the weekend about news reports that Democratic fund-raiser Johnny Chung funneled illegal campaign contributions from a Chinese military officer to the Democrats.

Here's a sample of what AllPolitics readers are saying, and if you'd like to comment on that or anything else, drop us an e-mail note. Please include your name and home town.

'Clinton Needs To Resign'

I find it hard to understand why our so called Justice Department has still not ordered an investigation into the "Chinese connection." Reno really does work for Clinton and Clinton only. He obviously works only for himself and Hillary. These people think they are the saviors of the American people. They need to be set straight. We will do a lot better without their "help." Clinton needs to resign!!!!

-- Shirley Ansara, Newaygo, Mich., May 18

'Impeach The Crook'

This entire great country is put in danger because Clinton sold our security and technology secrets to get himself elected. It seems the only thing that will wake our Congress up is a bomb from China. Americans are going about with a false sense of security. Don't blame India for our problems. If Clinton had not sold our security to China, India would not have felt threatened. THE WORD FOR WHAT CLINTON HAS DONE IS TREASON. Stop putting out false poll results, in an effort to make Congress believe that the American people are behind Clinton. A lot of blame for Clinton still being in office is because of false information to the American people and the White House spinmasters. Impeach the crook before he destroys this country.

-- Maggie Jameson, Mesa, Ariz., May 17

'One More Hypocritical Attack'

We still have no evidence that President Clinton or the Democrats knew that China was behind Johnny Chung's $100,000 campaign contribution. That's a far cry from the case of Haley Barbour, who while he ran the Republican National Committee actively solicited money from Hong Kong, fully knowing the source of the donations. The flap over Chung looks like one more hypocritical attack by the Republicans, doesn't it? Maybe if they'd quit blocking campaign finance reform, the GOP would have more credibility on the issue.

-- Charles Pluckhahn, Newton, Mass., May 16

'I Do Not Believe The Spin'

I am very upset about Chung saying that the money given to the DNC was from the Chinese. I do not believe the spin from the White House that they had no idea where the money came from. The man (Chung) visited the White House over 45 times. I wish just one Democrat would come forward and say enough is enough and that the truth has to come out. Where is the Democrat Howard Baker? When is the news media going to stop accepting the spin from the White House? Why did Time Warner give money to Webb Hubbell? Is this one of the reasons CNN has the nickname the Clinton News Network?

Thank you.

-- Vicki Strickland, May 16

'Republican Scandalmongers'

Let me get this straight. Arlen Specter says the Democrats knew that Johnny Chung was funneling money from the Chinese government. Then the Democrats said let's obtain all the pictures we can of Mr. Chung with the president. Give me a break! All the alleged scandals the Republican scandalmongers can fabricate will not breathe life back in to the Republican Party. Mr. Chung will say anything to keep from going to prison on tax charges.

-- Andy Agree, Los Angeles, May 16

'Egg On The Face'

Do you all see the egg on the face of John Glenn and the rest of the Democrats who ridiculed the "China plan" allegations last year? I see it. It runs in great streams of yellowish slime, dripping and dripping. The more they try to wipe it off, the more there is. It's a nightmare! It's everywhere! It's on Janet Reno and Mike McCurry; it's on the clown, Lanny Davis; it's on Al Gore and James Carville (oh my God, is it on him!); And it's on the face of all those Clinton apologists out there who steadfastly refuse to open their eyes and see the truth. Egg.

-- Tom Kane, St. Paul, Minn., May 16

'A Potomac Baseball Team'

Gee. Chinese Communist military money funneled to the DNC. I'm sure Bill Clinton knew nothing about it. After all, this is the most "ethical" administration in history. Only seven independent counsels. Two more and he can have a Potomac baseball team. Love those Dems!!!!!

-- Bob S., Ohio, May 16

'Get By With Anything'

The president is everyone's role model. The Clintons' low moral stance has everyone around them lowering the bar for acceptable character. Our role model is not what we should be emulating. This is Clinton's legacy, a legacy of indifference and an attitude of "if I deny it enough, if my people deny it enough, if the news media give it light coverage, then I can get by with anything."

I believe the DNC took foreign contributions believing that when caught the media and the public would say, "It's not so bad. It's been done before." Certainly NOT the role model we hope for our children and our adults in this country. How embarrassing some people seem not to care.

-- J. Starkey, Columbus, Miss., May 16

'The Smallest Possible Mental Box'

I watched my two-year-old son fall asleep tonight and thought about his future in this country. I want to believe he will be safe and happy.

But the Clinton Administration has different plans for him.

It has given our missile technology to the Communist Chinese government, which without hesitation murdered children in Tiananmen nine years ago.

a It has thereby touched off a potential arms race between India, Pakistan and China.

It has brought the world one step closer to the brink of global war.

One ponders how our president can sleep at night with these crimes on his conscience.

Oh, I forgot! He just puts this problem into the smallest possible mental box and thinks about it only when absolutely necessary. How cozy and convenient.

Mr. Clinton, I am ordering cable TV so I can watch your trial in the Senate without commercial interruption.

-- Mr. David Velky, Stafford, Texas, May 16

'The Most Unpleasant Experience'

I believe Chung was a direct conduit for Chinese government money to influence U.S. policy in general, and specifically another payoff to the Administration for special interest quid pro quo business/industrial payoffs. Loral and Hughes should be investigated, along with the administration and Democrat Party, along with the Riady/Lippo connection. The Clintons will eventually wind up as the most unpleasant experience in U.S. political history -- including Richard Nixon.

--R.M. Wilkes, May 16

'So Much Organic Fertilizer'

If the Chinese campaign donations were returned, just what and where in the blue-eyed world is the problem? Partisan GOPers believe they have uncovered a presidential crime whenever the Democrats fund-raising exceeds their efforts. Only GOP senators and representatives believe any of Chung's Chinese cash cow is part of a national political debate in the U.S. The total sum is so much organic fertilizer.

-- Tom Sutherland, Casper, Wyo., May 15

'A Bunch Of Monkeys And A Football'

There has been nothing explosive about any of the investigations and they will never be unless they become less partisan. Congress looks like a bunch of monkeys and a football. Get serious, look at abuse from both sides of the aisle and then maybe we could take you seriously.

-- Mike Tittle, El Dorado Springs, Mo., May 15

'The American Public Does Care'

Revelations are explosive. And yes, the American public does care. To put politics above national security, you are a traitor and should be dealt with as such.

Where is the public outcry? Where is the media asking the Democrats where their loyalty is -- to the party or to this great country?

-- Matt Robinson, Wilton, Conn., May 15

'A Major Threat To Our National Security'

No matter what your political position, if Americans do not stand up in outrage and demand that this White House explain why our president would give nuclear missile technology to the Chinese! And why this president would take campaign money knowing he would, as many expected, owe favors to the likes of Johnny Chung, John Huang, Charlie Trie, and the list goes on. All for a campaign, all to win an election, even if it is a major threat to our national security!

If people believe this administration and our president, if it is indicated they did not know about "these people" who were in and out of the White House, in photographs with the Clintons, and given security clearances for a year after leaving; and did not know where this money came from, then our country has lost its mind.

This president should be impeached immediately. It is one thing to lie and cover up land deals, sexual relationships, and even FBI files, and illegal firing of travel officers, but this is TREASON! This is frightening and dangerous. This is putting all Americans at risk!

STEP UP AMERICA. THIS MAN, OUR PRESIDENT, is a traitor! IMPEACH!

-- Mrs. Jan J. Dickson, Montara, Calif., May 15

'A Morally Corrupt Administration'

Somehow, in all the reporting of the Paula Jones lawsuit, the Lewinsky affair, the Hubbell tapes, illegal campaign financing and the sale of missile technology to China, the main issue seems to be getting lost in the sidebar stories. The main issue, as I understand it, is:

1. A president of the United States apparently is using the powers and resources of his elected office to cover up personal wrongdoing.

2. He is using those powers to obstruct justice by withholding evidence, legal process delays, and claiming special privileges that don't exist. These tactics are being implemented by government employees who are paid with tax dollars.

3. Anyone who dares question the president's character and integrity is viciously attacked by his political advisors, who do not bother to temper their arguments with fact.

4. All of these actions indicate that there is truth in the allegations.

The U.S.'s ability to lead, during a time of heightening world friction, is being hamstrung. It is becoming increasingly obvious that other world leaders are embarrassed to be seen, let alone photographed, with Mr. Clinton. Who can blame them? He has lost world respect.

The American people, according to the reported poll results, continue to give credit for the economic boom underway to this president's administration. They tend to forget the actions of previous administrations that set the stage for the growth currently underway. They also choose to ignore that the current economic cycle is heavily influenced by conditions in other parts of the world (i.e. Japan, Hong Kong and Indonesia), over which the U.S. has little or no influence. When the cycle turns the other way, and it will, who will take the credit then?

A morally corrupt administration is inflicting incalculable harm on the U.S. at a time of approaching world crisis. The president must either do his best to repair the damage he has inflicted by telling the truth and helping the investigations to conclusion or he must step down. The U.S. and world condition demands it.

-- John Cooper, Plano, Texas, May 15

'I Just Want To Know The Truth'

I want to let everyone know that this is not just another partisan response. I am a registered Democrat.

I think this money the DNC received from the Red Chinese Army explains why the communists have recently received approval for the latest and greatest computer technology from Clinton.

It also gives the impression that [Rep. Henry] Waxman and the other Democrats are adamant about stopping any kind of investigation into this matter for reasons other than those they claim publicly. I think they might not want the whole truth to come out.

The leaders in my political party have been dragging their feet for over a year, costing the taxpayers millions of dollars to bring these kind of matters to the public's attention. Yet the Democrats keep saying it is the Republicans that are spending the money. I JUST WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH, even if it costs another $40 million. It would be nice to have political leaders with integrity. Where are they?

-- Bill Kysar, Broken Bow, Okla., May 15

'The Biggest Break'

This appears to be the biggest break in finding out about the DNC and Chinese campaign contributions. Too bad you felt the death of Frank Sinatra was more important politically on "Inside Politics."

-- Homer Lohr, May 15

'The Sell-Out Of Our Country'

I'm distressed that you think the passing of Frank Sinatra is more important than the story of a hostile foreign power gaining favors from the president for contributions.

I find it unbelievable that the president, who has access to CIA and FBI intelligence, wasn't aware that this Liu woman was a colonel in the Chinese PLA, and the daughter of the top military officer in the Chinese army!

How convenient that Loral and Chinese contribute money to the DNC and then the president authorizes the sale of highly sensitive missile technology. When will the sell-out of our country end?

-- Don Adams, Cupertino, Calif., May 15
