Lewinsky Family Hires Media Rep
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 11) -- The family of Monica Lewinsky has hired a veteran media relations specialist, Judy Smith, to help handle the pressures of the high-profile controversy. Lewinsky's lawyer Bill Ginsburg said Sunday he is "delighted to have Ms. Smith on board," which will allow Ginsburg to focus more on the case's legal issues.
Smith, an attorney, has extensive experience dealing with the media on Washington issues. She runs her own media and public relations firm in New York and was deputy director of public information and associate counsel in the office of Iran-Contra prosecutor Lawrence Walsh.
She also served as special assistant in the U.S. attorney's office for the prosecution on drug charges of D.C. Mayor Marion Barry. From 1991 to 1992, Smith was the deputy press secretary to President George Bush.
After the election, she moved to NBC as senior vice president of communications.
A Washington grand jury is looking into reports that President Bill Clinton had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky, a former White House intern, and encouraged her to lie about it under oath. Clinton has denied the accusations.
A judge has ruled Lewinsky has no immunity deal with Whitewater prosecutor Ken Starr and could be compelled to testify before the grand jury.
