Currie To Face Grand Jury Again After Thursday Testimony
WASHINGTON, (AllPolitics, May 7) -- President Bill Clinton's personal secretary, Betty Currie, is expected to face a fourth day of questions from the grand jury investigating the president's relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
She spent three hours answering grand jury questions Thursday morning, and her lawyer, Lawrence Wechsler, told reporters she'll be back. She is expected to appear again next week.
Neither Currie nor her attorney would talk about her appearance Thursday. Currie had spent all day Wednesday before the grand jury, which is working for Whitewater independent counsel Ken Starr.
Thursday was Currie's third visit to the grand jury room; she has become a central figure in the probe of whether Clinton had a sexual relationship with White House intern Lewinsky and then sought to cover it up.
Clinton and presidential aide Vernon Jordan have said Currie befriended Lewinsky and introduced her to the president.
In his deposition in the Paula Jones harassment suit, Clinton testified that Lewinsky's visit to the White House last December was to see Currie and that Currie was the one who signed for gifts Lewinsky sent to the president.
The day Clinton gave sworn testimony in the Jones suit, he asked to meet with Currie the next morning to check his recollection of events.
Also on Thursday, Starr called White House steward Glen Maes before the grand jury. Stewards sometimes serve as presidential valets and have behind-the-scenes knowledge of the president's activities.
Currie's lawyer has said his client knows of no wrongdoing by the president. Her desk is just steps from the Oval Office, and she had frequent contact with Lewinski.
