Rep. Solomon Says He Will Leave Congress
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 27) -- Rep. Gerald Solomon, an
upstate New York Republican known for his opposition to gun control and support for a constitutional amendment to outlaw flag burning, said Monday he will leave Congress when his term expires.
"I'm for term limits and 20 yrs is enough!" Solomon said. He cited some health problems, and said he plans to go back into business and spend more time with his wife.
Solomon, 67, serves as chairman of the House Rules Committee and has
represented New York's 22nd congressional district since 1978. The area includes the Hudson River Valley.
Solomon is known for not backing away from a fight, and in 1996, he tangled with Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) when the House fought over a possible repeal of a ban on assault weapons.
"My wife lives alone five days a week in a rural area in
upstate New York," he told Kennedy in a nationally televised
exchange. "She has a right to defend herself when I'm not there,
son. And don't you ever forget it. Don't you ever forget it."
