Currie Due Back Before Grand Jury

WASHINGTON (April 13) -- The Monica Lewinsky grand jury is expected to get a return appearance Tuesday by President Bill Clinton's personal secretary, Betty Currie. Although the plans may change at the last minute, Currie has been alerted to come, sources tell CNN.
Currie is described by the president and by Clinton friend Vernon Jordan as the real friend of Lewinsky, responsible for their involvement with her. The grand jury is looking into allegations Clinton had a sexual relationship with the former White House intern and encouraged her to lie about it under oath. Clinton has denied both accusations.
One of the Oval Office "gatekeepers," Currie would have knowledge of any visits Lewinsky made to the Oval Office plus details of gift-giving and job search help extended to Lewinsky.
A return visit by Currie has been long anticipated. Also anticipated in some circles was an appearance this week by Linda Tripp, who made the original surreptitious tapes of Lewinsky talking about contacts with the president. Sources familiar with Tripp's schedule says she has not been notified to appear Tuesday, and they consider it unlikely she will appear this week.
One concern expressed by several sources familiar with the investigation is the judge's decision on whether Lewinsky has a binding immunity deal. Until that is decided, the plans to hear from Tripp are in limbo.
