Another White House Steward Goes Before Grand Jury

Linda Tripp fires one of her lawyers

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 9) -- Another White House steward appeared Thursday before the federal grand jury investigating President Bill Clinton's alleged relationship with ex-White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

The stewards often work near the president, and Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's team is interested in what they may have heard or seen.

Glen Maes testified before the panel Thursday; another steward, Bayani Nelvis, testified earlier. Nelvis works in a pantry next to the Oval Office and Clinton's private study in the West Wing.

Starr is probing whether Clinton had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky and encouraged her to lie about it under oath in connection with the Paula Jones case. Clinton has denied both accusations.

Meanwhile, Linda Tripp, the woman who tape-recorded conversations with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and ignited the controversy over Lewinsky's alleged relationship with President Bill Clinton has fired her attorney, James Moody, CNN has learned.

In a statement, Tripp said, "Mr. James Moody has been terminated as counsel by Linda Tripp. Any information provided by Mr. Moody to the media since February 1998 was not authorized and is wholly disavowed.

"Mr. Anthony Zaccagini of the Baltimore law firm of Semmes, Bowen and Semmes remains as lead counsel and as such has sole authority to speak publicly on my behalf," Tripp said.

"Mr. Zaccagini will continue to be assisted by Mr. Joseph Murttha of Irwin Green and Dexter," Tripp said.
