WASHINGTON (March 26) -- The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has named a prominent Chicago lawyer as chief investigative counsel for the Justice Department oversight project.
Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.) appointed David P. Schippers to the position. One GOP aide said Schippers is a Democrat.
Schippers, a defense lawyer, former assistant U.S. Attorney for northern
Illinois and former chief of the Department of Justice Organized Crime and
Racketeering Section in Chicago, is expected to join the committee staff on
Monday, March 30.
The House oversight committee granted a request for $1.3 million in
additional funding for the Justice investigation on Wednesday.
"Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this job," Hyde said. "I have confidence in him. He is someone who is very
familiar with the department and is a gentleman of integrity, honor and skill."
