White House Scandal At A Glance: Feb. 11
Today's developments:
- Former White House intern Monica Lewinsky will not appear before independent counsel Ken Starr's Washington grand jury Thursday, as originally scheduled.
- Lewinsky's mother, Marcia Lewis, left the federal court house in Washington after another day of grand jury testimony. Lewis is expected to testify again Thursday.
- First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton said she thought the
allegations against her husband "will slowly dissipate over time under the weight of its own insubstantiality."
- Howard County Maryland Prosecutor Marna McLendon announced she is turning the matter of the clandestine taping of Lewinsky by her onetime friend Linda Tripp over to the Maryland State Prosecutor's Office, saying no matter what she did or didn't do, she would be accused of acting based on partisan politics.
- Lewis C. Fox, a retired Secret Service uniformed guard, claims in an interview with CNN affiliate WPXI that he saw Monica Lewinsky come to the West Wing on weekends with documents she said were for the president. In a report in the Washington Post, Fox says he let Lewinsky into the Oval Office where she met with the president on a Saturday afternoon for 40 minutes during the fall of 1995.
- A White House official said it would be "very much at odds with standard operating procedure" for a lone uniformed Secret Service agent to let anyone into the Oval Office, without approval by another White House staff member.
