Lott Says Americans Reserving Judgment On Clinton

WASHINGTON (Feb. 9) -- As President Bill Clinton's approval ratings continue to rise despite the controversy over an alleged sexual relationship with a White House intern, Senate Republican leader Trent Lott told reporters Monday he believes the American people are reserving their judgment.

"I still think they are sitting on a precipice and they could teeter either way," Lott said. "And justice after all is truth in process -- and I think truth is still in process here and we don't know quite what to make of it."

The Mississippi senator said he believes it is premature to speculate on the president's problems, but does not believe people don't care about "virtue in office."

Lott also said it is too early to discuss impeachment procedures. Despite reports that GOP House leaders are looking into impeachment funding, Lott said he knows nothing about that and there is no move in the Senate.
