Forbes Wins A Straw Poll
ARLINGTON, Va. (AllPolitics, Jan. 31) -- Millionaire publisher Steve Forbes emerged as the preferred presidential candidate in a straw poll of conservatives surveyed at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference here.
Forbes had the support of 23 percent of the 1,500 conferees, followed by
Texas Gov. George W. Bush with 10 percent and commentator Pat Buchanan and House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 7 percent each. Another dozen Republicans trailed the top four. Thirteen percent of people who were surveyed said they were undecided.
The survey was taken Thursday and Friday by Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates, and the results were released Saturday.
Forbes has said he will decide after this fall's midterm elections whether to seek the GOP presidential nomination in 2000. He waged a spirited and expensive campaign in early 1996 before quitting the race in the face of Bob Dole's primary victories.
