ST.THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (Jan 2) -- Three U.S. customs agents remained hospitalized Friday after they were injured in an accident while returning from a security operation designed to protect Air Force One in waters off of St. Thomas.
The security operation was in advance of the arrival of the Clinton family for a vacation.
The Customs Service issued a written statement saying the agents had completed their assignment and were heading back to shore when their boat struck a rock or shoal.
Their 38-foot interceptor boat was severely damaged. No other vessel was involved.
The three agents were air lifted to San Juan, Puerto Rico and hospitalized.
An administration official said the accident was not due to any security threat to the president.
"It was strictly an accident," said Customs Service representative Layne Lathram.
The Customs Service has not released the names of the agents, citing concern for their medical conditions and the privacy of their families.
