Whitman Wins A Squeaker In New Jersey

New Jersey: New Jersey's Republican Gov. Christie Whitman successfully fought back a tough challenge from Democrat Jim McGreevey to win a second term.

The fiercely competitive Garden State race went down to the wire, with the race too close to call until all the ballots were in. Throughout the night, Whitman's camp suffered a scare as a one-point lead repeatedly swapped between their candidate and the Democratic challenger.

Gilmore Takes Virginia Governor's Race

Virginia Republican Jim Gilmore has ridden a wave of loathing for the state's personal-property tax on automobiles all the way to the governor's mansion. CNN has declared Gilmore, the state's former attorney general, the winner over his Democratic opponent, Lt. Gov. Don Beyer. The race had been close until the campaign's final weeks, when Gilmore started pulling away.
