Clinton Calls For National Unity
As cannons shots echoed over the nation's Capitol, President Bill Clinton called for "a new government for a new century," challenging all Americans to embrace Martin Luther King's dream of a society based on equality. Following an invocation from Rev. Billy Graham and a stirring rendition of "America The Beautiful" by opera great Jessye Norman, Clinton took the oath of office promptly at noon from Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. Minutes before, Vice President Al Gore took his oath of office from Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A Plea For CooperationJust in case President Bill Clinton and the Republican Congress didn't get the message on election day, the people attending inaugural events were more than happy to repeat it: "Get along!"
