Commerce Department Gets A Subpoena

Commerce Department seal

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Dec. 20) -- In an expansion of the Justice Department's investigation into the Democratic campaign finance controversy, the U.S. Commerce Department received a subpoena Thursday night for all entry and exit records kept around the time John Huang worked for the department.

According to Commerce spokeswoman Maria Cardona, the subpoena requested all original visitor logs -- records kept during business hours -- for the period of July 1, 1994 through Jan. 31, 1996, and all logs or records of time of arrival and departure during security hours from Dec. 1, 1994 through Feb. 29, 1996.

The subpoena came from the Justice Department's Public Integrity Division, which Attorney General Janet Reno has asked to look into the matter. The president's legal defense fund, the White House and, according to The Washington Post, the Democratic National Committee also have received subpoenas in the inquiry.

Huang moved from the Lippo Bank to the Commerce Department in July 1994, but his application for the appointed position was submitted in January 1994. He left Commerce to become a vice chairman in fund-raising for the Democratic National Committee in December 1995.

At the DNC he raised more than $2 million, largely from Asian-American sources. Of that, more than $1.2 million has been returned by the committee because the donations were illegal or questionable.
