Clinton Family Together for Holidays

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Dec. 15) -- Chelsea Clinton and the new first dog are both home in time for the holidays after completing work on their respective educations. Chelsea wrapped up her first quarter at Stanford University and the three-month Chocolate Labrador apparently successfully completed his obedience training.

Chelsea arrived at the White House on Saturday just a day after the end of her first quarter and the as-yet unnamed puppy came shortly after the Clintons returned from church services on Sunday.

The new puppy stayed at home while the family attended "Christmas in Washington," a benefit for the Children's National Medical Center. The affair was hosted by actress Glenn Close and was attended by celebrities including opera singer Thomas Hampson and the Hanson brothers. The first family helped serenade the audience with Christmas carols.

"More than any other holiday Christmas is for our children. We revel in their excitement, we rejoice in their growth, we do our best to help them make the most of their God-given gifts," President Bill Clinton said.

The Clintons placed gifts under the tree to be donated to the medical center with some help from children who acted as Santa's helpers. Among the helpers were four-year-old daughters of Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater and White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry and Sen. Orrin Hatch's (R-Utah) four-year-old grandson.

"You guys did a good job. We're proud of you," the president told the little helpers.

Clinton attended a private party at the home of his attorney, Bob Bennett, following the benefit. The new pup accompanied him, but waited outside with presidential aides who walked him and let him sit in the limousine to keep warm.
