Subject: Gore To Attend Global Warming Conference
Vice President Al Gore will go to Kyoto, Japan, to represent the U.S. at the global warming conference.
Announcing the decision in a meeting of top advisors, President Bill Clinton said climate change "is a danger that the world will ignore at its own peril."
The decision on whether Gore would attend the conference has been controversial since there is still no final agreement on a proposed global warming treaty. But Gore, who has been outspoken on the issue, wanted to go.
Gore told reporters the U.S. was "prepared to walk away" from a bad treaty.
Clinton said Gore will outline the U.S. position to 1,500 delegates during a one-day visit next week, but undersecretary of state Stuart E. Eizenstat will do the actual negotiations.
