A Miami Voting Scandal

miami

MIAMI (AllPolitics, Nov. 13) -- State officials are monitoring today's mayoral runoff election here, after ballots and other election materials were seized at the home of a local political leader. Mayor Joe Carollo faces ex-mayor Xavier Suarez in the voting, and the state is overseeing the use of absentee ballots in the race. On Monday, state investigators seized more than 100 absentee ballots from the home of Alberto Russi, a 92-year-old political boss in the city's Little Havana section. Russi was arrested and charged with vote fraud. In the Nov. 4 election, Carollo received 49.6 percent of the vote, just short of a majority. Carollo has filed a lawsuit, saying he would have won outright except for suspect absentee ballots for Suarez in the first election.

No Election? Town Says It Forgot

BACONTON, Ga. (AllPolitics, Nov. 13) -- Embarrassed city officials are trying to explain how they forgot to hold an election on Nov. 4 for three seats on its five-member City Council. "I guess sometimes in these little itty-bitty towns ... things get dropped between the cracks," City Attorney Tommy Coleman told The Associated Press. The mistake came to light when former Mayor J.B. Tyre, who moved away, called a friend to see who had won. Coleman said he believes the three council members didn't know their terms were up. "There was no interest and there were no candidates," he said.

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 13) -- The U.S. has new ambassadors to Italy and the Vatican. In separate swearing-in ceremonies on Wednesday, former Rep. Lindy Boggs was sworn in as ambassador to the Vatican, and Rep. Thomas Foglietta (D-Pa.) became ambassador to Italy. Foglietta had delayed his resignation from the House for several weeks to finish congressional work. "I love this body and leave it with bittersweet emotions," Foglietta wrote in letters to House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minority Leader Richard Gephardt. "I move on to exciting new challenges but I leave so many good friends and colleagues." Boggs, 81, who sworn in by Vice President Al Gore, served in Congress from 1973 to 1990. She knew Gore when he was a toddler.

No Clinton-Netanyahu Meeting Next Week

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 13) -- The White House says because of scheduling conflicts, there will be no meeting between President Bill Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when Netanyahu visits the U.S. next week. Netanyahu will be in Indianapolis for a speech on Sunday and in Los Angeles for events Monday and Tuesday. Some opposition members in Israel are calling it a snub, but White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry said, "I haven't heard any concerns expressed by the government of Israel." Netanyahu is due to meet with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in London on Friday.
