Supreme Court Gives Green Light To Prop 209

Without comment, justices refuse to hear challenge to California's anti-affirmative action measure

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Nov. 3) -- The Supreme Court this morning rejected a challenge to California's Proposition 209, the anti-affirmative action voter initiative that barred the state government from using race or gender as criteria in hiring or school admission decisions.

Without comment, the high court turned aside a lawsuit filed by a coalition of civil rights groups. The ruling is consistent with the court's refusal last month to suspend enforcement of the measure.

While the decision not to hear the case sets no precedent, it could open the door for other states to pass similar measures.
