Va. Gov. Race: Poll Gives GOP 7-Point Lead

Christie Whitman campaigns in N.J. with retired Gen. Colin Powell

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Oct. 23) -- With the election less than two weeks away, a new poll shows Republican Jim Gilmore has jumped into a lead over Democrat Don Beyer in the Virginia governor's race.

Gilmore had 48 percent to Beyer's 41 percent with 11 percent still undecided. Previous polls had showed the race a virtual dead heat.

Beyer will be looking for a boost from President Bill Clinton, who now is scheduled to make a second campaign appearance in Northern Virginia just before Election Day.

Today, Beyer campaigned with gun-control advocates Jim and Sarah Brady, after his Republican rival got help on the trail from a famous gun-rights advocate.

National Rifle Association vice president and movie actor Charlton Heston appeared yesterday at a fund-raiser with Gilmore -- and compared him to former President Ronald Reagan.

Garden State governor's race

Clinton also plans a late campaign visit to New Jersey, a sign the White House still is optimistic about the chances of Democrat Jim McGreevey.

The latest poll shows McGreevey trailing Gov. Christie Whitman by six points. Whitman had some heavy-duty campaign help today, as retired Gen. Colin Powell joined her at a high school appearance. Whitman also got the endorsement of two of the state's leading black clergymen.

New York's 13th congressional district

In the special congressional race in New York's 13th district, Democrat Eric Vitaliano is responding, on the air, to a Republican ad slamming his record.

In his first broadcast TV ad buy, Vitaliano will run two 10-second spots in the New York area.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee spent nearly $800,000 on its ad campaign against Vitaliano. The Democratic National Committee says it does not plan to run any ads in the tight race between Vitaliano and Republican Vito Fossella. They're vying to fill the seat of GOP-congresswoman-turned-TV-anchor Susan Molinari.
