Senate Kills $50 Billion Tobacco Tax Credit
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Sep. 10) -- In a legislative blow to the tobacco industry, the Senate today voted 95-3 to reverse a $50 billion tax credit tobacco companies could claim against costs of a national tobacco settlement. The controversial credit was added in the middle of the night to the balanced budget bill Congress passed this summer. The $50 billion had been approved to help fund children's health care. Sen. Richard Durbin (D.-Ill.), who led the effort to repeal the tax break, declared victory after the vote, saying it sends a message to the tobacco industry not to attempt similar backroom deals in the future.
Clintons Will Drop Chelsea Off At Stanford
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Sep. 10) -- Like parents all over the country, Bill and Hillary Clinton will drop daughter Chelsea off at college this month. The first couple is due to leave Washington Sep. 18 to accompany their daughter to Stanford University, where Chelsea, 17, is enrolling as a freshman. The Clintons will remain in the San Francisco Bay Area for a couple days, because the president has some scheduled events on Sep. 20, a White House spokesman said.
