Feds Resist Demands For Net Phone Rules'No need to regulate,' says Commerce Department official
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Sep. 5) -- Despite pleas from small long-distance phone companies, the federal government has no plans to regulate long-distance telephone calls over the Internet. "Washington at this point has no need to regulate," said Commerce Department Assistant Secretary Larry Irving. A group of smaller long-distance companies, the America's Carriers Telecommunications Associated, has asked the Federal Communications Commission to halt the sale of software that lets computer users talk over the Net. The group's March 1996 petition also wants the government to require Internet phone companies to pay fees to subsidize affordable phone service for low-income people. With Internet long-distance calls, sound quality can be lower, but prices are lower, too. The calls travel over data networks rather than public telephone networks. About 60 companies offer Internet phone service.
