CHICAGO (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- Former Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, jailed on charges of mail fraud, was released from a federal work camp in Oxford, Wis., where he served for 15 months. The 69-year-old Illinois Democrat checked in Tuesday night to a halfway house in Chicago, where he will serve out the remaining two months of his 17-month sentence. Rostenkowski, once the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, pleaded guilty in April 1996 to two counts of mail fraud involving his House office.

Symington Jury Starts Over

PHOENIX, Ariz. (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- It's back to square one for the Arizona jury deliberating 21 real estate fraud felony counts against the state's Republican governor, Fife Symington. One of the jurors was dismissed Tuesday. The judge added an alternate to the panel today and told them to start deliberations again. The dismissed juror, a 74-year old former Republican precinct committeewoman, says she would have voted to acquit Symington of all charges. She says she was dismissed because fellow jurors thought she was obstructing deliberations.

RNC vs. DNC: Batter Up!

softball

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- The Democratic National Committee had better pin its hopes for the future on political rather than softball skills. The Republican National Committee thoroughly trounced its political rival in Tuesday night's annual game in Washington. It was 26-0 after five innings, when they called it quits under a "mercy rule." RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson was coaching rather than playing because he recently hurt his back while running, of all things, the Israeli armed forces' obstacle course. Nicholson, a former Army Ranger, not only finished the course, but he outshot an Israeli colonel in the sharpshooting phase.
