Subject: White House Announces Staff Changes

President Clinton today announced several new staff appointments and promotions. Clinton friend and former advisor Paul Begala is rejoining the administration as Assistant to the President and Counselor to the President.

Sidney Blumenthal, most recently a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine, will assume the role of Assistant to the President as part of the Communications Team.

Clinton also announced the promotion of Stephanie Streett to Assistant to the President and Director of Presidential Scheduling. Her duties will continue to include supervising the scheduling operation, managing domestic and international travel, and daily appointments. Streett's previous title had been deputy assistant.

Another promotion is Michael Waldman as Assistant to the President and Director of Speechwriting. Waldman has been with the administration since Clinton's first term and also serves as the principal White House policy adviser on campaign finance reform and political reform.

The final promotion is J. Terry Edmonds to the position of Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Speechwriting. This is a newly created position that becomes effective immediately.
