(AllPolitics, June 4) -- Democrat Jim McGreevey came out swinging today, one day after he defeated two rivals for the chance to face Gov. Christie Todd Whitman. At a post-primary news conference, McGreevey, the mayor of Woodbridge, attacked Whitman's $2.8 billion borrowing plan and challenged her to a debate on the subject anytime. He said her plan "represents government on a gold card."
In Tuesday's primary, McGreevey, 39, defeated Democrats Rob Andrews, a four-term southern New Jersey congressman, and Michael Murphy, a former Morris County prosecutor. McGreevey had 40 percent, Andrews, 38 percent and Murphy, 22 percent. On the Republican side, Whitman was unopposed. Whitman also hit the campaign trail today, visiting with voters in Cherry Hill and promising to run on her record of reducing unemployment, overhauling welfare, establishing core curriculum standards for education and cutting crime. |
