WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 20) -- The Senate voted 64-36 this afternoon to ban a controversial type of late-term abortion, but the result fell short of the two-thirds margin needed to avoid a promised veto by President Bill Clinton.
"We worry so much about the right to choose," said Sen. Rick Santorum, the ban's main sponsor in the Senate. "What about the right to choose life?"
But opponents, including Clinton, said the legislation did not include sufficient exceptions to protect women's health.
