Subject: China Denies Attempts To Influence U.S. Elections
Chinese President Jiang Zemin has issued a written statement denying once again that China tried to influence presidential elections in the United States.
The statement on the brewing international campaign financing scandal in the United States reads:
"In handling its bilateral relations with other countries China has all along strictly observed the principle of mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. This is also a fundamental principle governing our conduct of relations with the U.S. My government has never been involved in or supported any political contributions. This has no base in fact. Some countries and a region have made political contributions and pursued money politics in the U.S., which is an open secret. However, we have not heard much strong reaction. It's hard to understand."
