![]() From: Tom Dunlavey/CNN In: Washington Posted: 4-29-97 Subject: Rep. Burton Claims White House Stonewalling House Fund-Raising Probe The chairman of the House committee investigating Democratic fund-raising claims the White House is stonewalling committee subpoenas for documents.
Republican Dan Burton of Indiana says the White House failed to meet a noon deadline Monday for turning over all documents relating to John Huang, the Riady family and the Lippo Group -- documents subpoenaed by the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee. Burton says the White House told him that the president would withhold and claim privilege for some documents, which Burton says is improper and violates what Burton maintains was a promise not to claim executive privilege. Burton says he expects to issue additional subpoenas this week, including at least one for White House documents relating to Webster Hubbell, the former Justice Department official. Investigators want to know if payments made to Hubbell by the Riady's Indonesian conglomerate amounted to "hush money" to Hubbell to keep quiet about the Clintons' role in the Whitewater affair. |
