Subject: Clinton Likely To Name Massachusetts Gov. Weld As Ambassador To Mexico

President Bill Clinton's likely choice to become the next U.S. ambassador to Mexico is Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, CNN has confirmed.

Sources say it's not a done deal yet, but they say the president would like to reach across party lines to bring another high-profile Republican into his administration.

If nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, Weld would succeed James Jones in Mexico City.

Clinton is planning to visit Mexico on May 5, his first trip south of the border since taking office.

Earlier this year, there were reports that the president was seriously considering nominating Weld to a senior position in the State Department or the Justice Department.

At that time, sources close to Massachusetts Sen.Ted Kennedy were said to be lobbying against any appointment for Weld. Their reasoning is Massachusetts' Lt. Gov. Paul Cellucci would replace Weld, and since Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy is said to be thinking of running for governor, Cellucci would be a more formidable opponent as an incumbent governor.

The most prominent Republican in the Clinton Administration is Secretary of Defense William Cohen.
