Dole's Loan To Gingrich

Most think the deal should be approved

By Keating Holland/CNN

poll

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 21) -- A majority, 63 percent, of the public thinks that the House ethics committee should allow House Speaker Newt Gingrich to proceed with the plan announced last week to take a personal loan from Bob Dole in order to pay his $300,000 penalty, according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.

A CNN/Time poll released last Friday shows that a majority think that Gingrich's decision to pay that money with a loan from Dole is inappropriate.

It appears that although Americans do not approve of Gingrich's arrangement with Dole, they do not find it objectionable enough to want to see it blocked. A majority of the public continues to hold a favorable view of Dole, making him over twice as popular as Gingrich.
