New House Subpoenas Target Hubbell, Chung

campaign fund-raising

By Timothy McCaughan/CNN

WASHINGTON (April 4) -- The House committee investigating campaign-finance abuses plans to issue 25 more subpoenas today, focusing on documents related to former administration officials Webster Hubbell and Craig Livingstone and Democratic contributor Johnny Chung.

The House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), is looking into the hiring of Hubbell shortly after he left a senior-level position at the Justice Department and before he pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges regarding his former clients.

In all, 17 of the subpoenas relate to Hubbell's hiring. They request information from the organizations that hired him, including former Democratic National Committee official Truman Arnold's company, the corporation of President Bill Clinton's friend Bernard Rapoport and CNN's parent company Time Warner, among others.

The legal defense fund of Livingstone, the former head of the White House personnel security office, will also be subpoenaed. Livingstone up until now has not been associated with the campaign finance controversies, but was central to the FBI files controversy.

Chung, the controversial Asian-American fax entrepreneur, has also been targeted by the committee, as has his company, Automated Intelligence Systems.

The DNC has already decided to return all of the $366,000 contributed by Chung and Automated Intelligence Systems following an internal audit. Chung gave $50,000 of that money in a check to first lady Hillary Clinton's chief of staff inside White House grounds.

Among the other individuals to be subpoenaed is Susan Thomases, a close friend and advisor to the president and the first lady. She is being asked to produce documents relating to Hubbell, the Lippo Group and James Riady, among others.
