Lamar! Lives To Run Again
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 21) -- Lamar Alexander is stepping up to the mound to make his first real pitch for Campaign 2000. CNN has learned that the former Tennessee governor, Bush education secretary and 1996 GOP presidential hopeful will hold his first big fund-raiser Tuesday in Nashville. An aide says it's hoped the function will raise $1 million. Also, Alexander's political action committee is making a timely name change. The "Republican Fund for the '90s" will become the "Campaign for a New American Century."
Eldest Gore Daughter To Marry
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 21) -- Karenna Gore, Vice President Al Gore's oldest daughter, is engaged to be married to Dr. Andrew Schiff, 32, a primary care physician at New York Hospital. Aides to her mother, Tipper Gore, said the wedding will be held in Washington in November. Gore, 23, is an editorial assistant at Slate magazine. Albright: Troops To Albania?
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 21) -- Secretary of State Madeleine Albright suggested during meetings with other administration officials last week that NATO might need to send a force to Albania to restore order and cover the evacuation of diplomats and other non-Albanians, a senior administration official said on Friday. But the official, confirming the outlines of a New York Times report, said Albright raised the possibility of using a NATO force only at the end of the discussion and as one of a number of possibilities. The high-level meeting last week was called after gunmen fired on U.S. helicopters as they attempted to land in Tirana to evacuate Americans.
What's the Kennedy-Tamraz Link?
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 21) -- Aides to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) are working to clarify his role with a controversial fund-raiser, Roger Tamraz, whose connection to Anthony Lake helped doom his nomination to head the CIA. Kennedy's spokesman tells CNN the senator had a social relationship with the oil financier, and that at a meeting in December 1995, Tamraz asked Kennedy's advice on an oil pipeline project. But aides say Kennedy did Tamraz no political favors after he raised money for Kennedy's political machine, nor were the contributions linked to the 1995 discussion. Also suggesting a Kennedy-Tamraz link, however, are revelations Kennedy's wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, represented Tamraz in legal matters. But aides say the senator and his wife do not discuss her legal work. |
