New Questions On Hubbell Payments

N.Y. Times says one $100,000 payment to Hubbell came just days after James Riady visited the White House

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 20) -- Just days after Indonesian businessman James T. Riady visited the White House in June 1994, one of Riady's Hong Kong companies paid about $100,000 to Webb Hubbell, the disgraced ex-Clinton Administration official who was then facing a criminal probe, The New York Times reported today.

The Times, quoting people in the U.S. and abroad who it described as familiar with the arrangement, said while the Riady visits and the $100,000 payment have been a matter of record for some time, it was not known until now how closely the payment followed Riady's White House visits.

David E. Kendall, the president's personal lawyer, said neither the president nor Mrs. Clinton asked or suggested that anyone hire Hubbell, a lawyer.

The timing of the payment raises additional questions for Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who has been looking at a series of payments to Hubbell, many from companies controlled by friends and supporters of President Clinton.

TIME magazine reported last month on Starr's interest in the payments. Some Republicans have wondered aloud whether the legal jobs were part of a "hush-money" campaign directed by the White House to keep Hubbell happy and dissuade him from telling investigators what he knows about the Whitewater affair.

According to the Times, Riady visited the White House during the week of June 21-25, 1994 and the $100,000 payment occurred in the last week of June 1994.

White House lawyers already have received a subpoena seeking information on what officials knew about Hubbell's relationship with the Riady family's business empire.
