White House Sought Tamraz File

Democratic contributor unaware of CIA reports on his activities

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 18) -- The Clinton Administration sought documents from the CIA on a controversial Democratic party contributor so that he could be allowed to visit the White House despite opposition from a senior National Security Council official.

Roger Tamraz, who is wanted for questioning by the international law enforcement agency Interpol, told CNN that he did not know the CIA was asked to give the White House reports on him.

Tamraz and his company are pushing for a billion-dollar oil pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Turkey, and though Tamraz says he wanted the support of the U.S. government, he said he did not think his personal and company campaign donations in 1995 and 1996 would result in any special government treatment.(416K WAV sound)

Tamraz attended a White House coffee in April 1995, and says he told officials wary of his background to check into his past, though he says he had no idea the CIA was compiling reports on him.

The CIA announced an internal review Monday after news reports suggested the agency had become involved in domestic political affairs. Secret Service officials said they routinely check a nationwide computer database for criminal warrants on White House guests, but not all Interpol warrants are in the computer system.
