Vote On Lake Due Next Week

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 14) -- Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee could vote late next week on Anthony Lake's nomination to head the Central Intelligence Agency. The committee, which has been questioning Lake this week, has three more sessions scheduled next week. "I'd like to wrap it up," panel chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) told The Associated Press. There has been some partisan division at the hearings, with Democrats accusing Republicans of repetitive questioning.

A Different View On Mexico's Drug Certification

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 14) -- The Senate appears unlikely to follow the House's lead and overturn a presidential declaration that Mexico is cooperating with the U.S. in efforts to curb drug trafficking. A bipartisan group of senators say doing so would hurt relations with Mexico and damage the anti-drug efforts. Under a measure the House approved on Thursday, Mexico would lose its drug ally certification in 90 days unless it allows more U.S. agents to work in the country, extradites Mexicans sought by the U.S., improves air security over the border and takes other steps.
