Overseas Money Worries

Journal/NBC News survey finds most have 'major concerns' about overseas money influencing U.S. elections

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 13) -- A new survey finds that Americans are more worried about the specter of overseas funds influencing American elections than they are about anything else at issue in the campaign finance controversy.

The poll, commissioned by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News, found that three-quarters of those surveyed have "major concerns" about overseas money flowing into the Democratic Party. And it found that 53 percent believe that alleged Chinese contributions to Democrats did influence policy decisions.

But it also found that many Americans don't think fund-raising problems are unique to the Democrats. Two-thirds of those surveyed said that President Bill Clinton and the Democratic Party "did what many politicians do"; only 28 percent thought that their behavior was different from that of other campaigns.

It also found the country split on the issue of public financing of campaigns; 46 percent of those surveyed favored funding campaigns from the federal treasury, while 42 percent opposed.

The survey also found that Clinton's approval rating has softened slightly, from 60 percent approval just before his second inauguration to 57 percent now. This finding tracks what other polls this week have found.

The poll of 2,010 adults was conducted March 6-10 and has a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points.
