Herman To Get Hearing After Queries AnsweredBy Kevin Bohn/CNN
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Feb. 25) -- The Senate Labor Committee, which still has not scheduled hearings for President Bill Clinton's embattled Labor Secretary nominee, Alexis Herman, has given the White House a list of questions to answer regarding her background. Administration officials say the list was received last Friday and that it will take about a week to get the answers back to Capitol Hill. A spokesman for the committee refused to characterize the substance of the questions. A White House official says the questions did not raise any new subjects but concentrated on the issues that have already been raised in news stories. Controversies surrounding Herman have included her role in arranging some of the White House political coffees with donors, the awarding of contracts while she was in the Carter Administration's Labor Department right before she left her job, and her involvement in a controversial investment in the District of Columbia. The spokesman for the committee says once the White House does answer the questions, Herman's hearing will probably be scheduled for a couple of weeks later. |
