    Colorado Developer Wins RNC Chair

    rep

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Jan. 17) -- After six ballots, Jim Nicholson of Colorado emerged as the Republican Party's new chairman this afternoon.

Nicholson had been considered in the top tier of candidates, but was not the favorite. Former New Hampshire Gov. Steve Merrill was thought to be the front-runner.

"We are the party of opportunity and hope and we are the conservative party," Nicholson declared following his victory. "We are the party with moral courage and it is now our job to show the American people how our philosophy and policies can make a difference in their everyday lives."

Nicholson, 58, is a land developer who is the state party chairman in Colorado, but has no experience on the national level. An Iowa native, he served in Vietnam after graduating from West Point. After Vietnam he attended Columbia Law School and practiced environmental law in Colorado before becoming a developer.

Other candidates for the committee post were: RNC General Counsel David Norcross, Texas GOP Chairman Tom Pauken, Ohio GOP Chairman Bob Bennett, Michigan RNC committeeman Chuck Yob, former RNC Co-chairman Jeanie Austin and California GOP Chairman John Herrington.
