WA 1: Republican White Wins Second Term

Rick White

(AllPolitics, Nov. 6) -- Freshman Republican Rep. Rick White successfully presented himself as a centrist to defeat Democrat Jeff Coopersmith and win a second term in Washington's 1st District.

With 100 percent of the precincts counted, White had 52 percent of the vote to Coopersmith's 48 percent.

Organized labor contributed negative ads about White's record on Medicare, environmental regulations and reduced funding for workplace safety programs. White argued he tried to reduce the federal bureaucracy and give more power to the states.

Republicans charged Coopersmith, a former prosecutor in King County, which includes Seattle, with seriously mishandling a criminal case, and pointed out he did not live in the 1st District when he filed.
