Okla. 02: GOP Freshman Hangs On

(AllPolitics, Nov. 5) -- Republican freshman Rep. Tom Coburn held onto Oklahoma's historically Democratic 2nd District, defeating the challenge of Democrat Glen Johnson.

Coburn, a physican who continues to practice medicine and promised a three-term limit, tried to portray Johnson as a career politican. He defended his Medicare votes as fiscally responsible.

Johnson, state House speaker recruited to run, criticized Coburn's support of Medicare restructing in an area with a large number of retirees. Johnson also touted his efforts on education and claimed his tax legislation brought thousands of jobs to Oklahoma.
