Ohio 10: Democrat Kucinich Wins Slugfest

(AllPolitics, Nov. 6) -- Democrat Dennis Kucinich made the most of the unpopularity of Republican Rep. Martin Hoke to win their mudslinging contest for Ohio's 10th District seat.

Kucinich, a one-time political "wonder boy" who was mayor when Cleveland slid into financial default nearly 20 years ago, revived his fortunes and won a state Senate seat in 1994. Labor unions joined in the Democrat's attack on Hoke's conservative record, especially on the Medicare funding issue.

Hoke, a successful businessman, did not miss the chance to utilize his opponent's past political controversies in the campaign. He tried to paint Kucinich as a career office-seeker.

The 10th, an urban and suburban district with many voters of Eastern European descent, is considered to lean to the left.
