Many Close Races Still OutWe started the evening with 34 tossups, and at 1 a.m. ET we've still got 18 of them with us. Two other races that have shaped up to be very interesting are those of Reps. David E. Bonior and Nancy L. Johnson. Bonior (D-Mich.), the House minority whip, was locked in a close race with Republican Susy Heintz. The race was considered to be leaning Democratic, before Bonior finally won with a ten-point lead. Johnson (R-Conn.), chairman of the House's ethics committee in the 104th Congress, is trailing slightly behind with almost all the ballots counted. Her seat was thought to be safe, and hers would be the only one in 255 safe seats called so far to go against expectations. Related Stories |
